Most people getting off a plane have had a relaxing holiday or have wrapped up a good business deal and are generally in a happy mood when they reach the terminal.

So either Julia Stiles is a really bad flier and her tears were of relief or she just didn't want to be home.

The actress was snapped looking red-faced and rather stressed as she arrived at Los Angeles International Airport yesterday.

She appeared to be a little flustered as she arrived at the carousel to collect her luggage, her faced flushed and blotchy.

But when she left the baggage claim and made her way into the terminal she burst into tears, leaning up against the wall as she sobbed.

She managed to compose herself and flash a brief smile to let everyone know she was ok.

But onlookers were left perplexed to her plight, with some suggesting that a phone call she received shortly after leaving the terminal brought bad news.

She could also have been upset at some lost luggage as she didn't appear to have any with her when she left the claim area.

It was also a surprise to see the usually-composed Miss Stiles show her emotions so publicly when she revealed this week that she is usually hides them when she is in 'civilised society'.

Last year, Julia, 30, had a guest role on Dexter, for which she won an Emmy and a Golden Globe.

And she said she loved the role because she got to tap into the emotions she would never normally reveal in public.

The show sees Michael C. Hall portray Dexter Morgan, a police worker who murders criminals in his spare time.

Julia plays Lumen Ann Pierce and said the show made her tap into particularly emotional areas.

Speaking to the LA Times, she said: 'There’s a kind of sacredness to the way that [kill scenes are] filmed. Everyone’s very much on alert because of the safety issues, but, yeah, that tradition… I felt privileged to be a part of it.

'And then performing it, you get to play out things in your imagination that you’re not allowed to do. That was special to me,emotions like hate or anger or revenge, all the stuff you have to repress in civilised society.'
