The Godmother: Sir Elton John and David Furnish are believed to have asked Lady Gaga to be their son Zachary's godparent

She has been a strong campaigner for gay rights and is an active supporter of raising HIV and AIDS awareness.

Something that Sir Elton John and his partner David Furnish took on board when deciding to choose Lady Gaga as the godmother to their baby son Zachary.

According to reports today, the eccentric singer is set to become one of the little boy's godparents.

Reported in the Mirror, Furnish, 48, hinted that he and Sir Elton, 63, had chosen Gaga, 24, as godmother because of her ardent campaigning.

During an interview this week, Furnish was asked if Gaga - real name Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta - was going to be godmother to Zachary.

In a story on cbsnews.com, Furnish was being interviewed by Canadian magazine Macleans, and the reporter asked him: 'Correct me if I'm wrong but Lady Gaga has been named Zachary's godmother. What led you to choose her?'

Furnish replied: 'We haven't publicly confirmed that yet but your sources are very good!

'I prefer not to comment on it because we are going to make a statement about godparents later on.'

Well looked after: Sir Elton and Furnish, seen here with Zachary on holiday in Hawaii this week, have also asked a lesbian couple to be his other godparents

But he praised Gaga for her campaign work and added: 'She’s all about inclusiveness and tolerance.

'She believes you can be whoever you want to be, we don’t have to live in a world of conformity and we can all benefit from individuality.

'That’s the best message in the world – the freedom to be who you are, do what you want and love who you want to love.'

Sir Elton and Furnish have also asked their good friends magazine editor Ingrid Sischy and her lesbian partner Sandy Brant to be Zachary’s other moral guardians.

Gaga is a big philanthropist and has raised millions for charity, including MAC Cosmetics HIV and AIDS prevention campaign by teaming up with singer Cyndi Lauper to launch a lipstick under the name Viva Glam, proceeds of which were donated to the campaign.

Gaga and Sir Elton also duetted at last year's Grammy Awards sitting opposite each other on pianos mixing his hit single Your Song with her song Speechless and paying tribute to one another by changing the lyrics.
