'Ecstatic': Mel B and husband Stephen Belafonte have announced they are expecting a baby this summer
With her former band mates Victoria Beckham and Emma Bunton pregnant, perhaps she felt left out.
Mel B has announced that she, too, is pregnant. The Spice Girl is expecting her first child with husband Stephen Belafonte this summer.
'We’re really excited. We wouldn’t have planned and waited for four years to have a baby if we weren’t really excited about it and ready for it. Even though you can never really be truly ready,' the 35-year-old told Hello! magazine.
The couple, who began trying for a baby around Christmas and fell pregnant soon afterwards, say they were surprised it happened so fast.
Mel says: 'The power of wanting a baby, I think, can sometimes just work to your advantage. I didn't think I would get pregnant that quickly.'
Of finding out the baby's sex, she reveals: 'I haven’t fully decided if I want to know or not. I’m over the first trimester, so I’m past the shady three months and on to safe territory.
'The first three months, I was pretty sick and tired, to be honest, which I’ve never been before.'
Stephen, also 35, says he was 'ecstatic' when Mel told him the happy news.
'We wouldn't have planned and waited for four years to have a baby if we weren't really excited about it and ready for it,' he tells the magazine.
'I promptly got a bottle of Cristal champagne and said, "Baby, enjoy this glass because you can’t drink anymore!" I must tell you, she really enjoyed that glass of Cristal.'
Pregnant: Mel B, pictured at Heathrow earlier this month, has just entered her second trimester
The news comes just days after the 35-year-old singer spoke of her longing to become pregnant.
She told last week's Reveal magazine: 'I'm always broody. Hopefully, I'm going to be pregnant by the end of this year, or, if not, next year. I love kids.'
The singer joins band mates Emma, who is due in May, and Victoria, who will give birth in July.
Mel, full name Melanie Brown, and Belafonte raise three children together.
Growing brood: Mel and husband Stephen Belafonte already raise three daughters, Phoenix Chi and Angel Iris from Mel's previous relationships and Stephen's daughter Giselle
The singer has two daughters - Phoenix Chi, 12, from her first marriage to backup dancer Jimmy Gulzar, and Angel, three, from her short-lived relationship with Eddie Murphy.
Stephen has a six-year-old daughter Giselle from a previous relationship.
The couple married on June 6 in Las Vegas and now live together with their daughters in Los Angeles.
In her Reveal interview, Mel mused: 'What's the key to a happy marriage? I married my best friend. We've been mates for ten years.'
Join the club: Mel's former band mates Victoria Beckham (left) and Emma Bunton are also expecting
It could turn out to be a busy year for the Leeds-born singer. In addition to her pregnancy, Mel is still hoping for yet another Spice Girls reunion.
While the other girls, including Emma Bunton, have rubbished reports that they are reforming, Mel has admitted she wants the idea to go ahead.
'I'd love to get back with the Spice Girls. I've always championed more Spice Girls concerts, DVDs and music,' she told Contactmusic recently.
Happy families: Stephen tweeted this picture with Angel and Giselle yesterday
'But we haven't had that conversation as a group yet and I can't speak on everyone's behalf.'
'Right now, we're all talking about the musical Viva Forever, which is coming out next year.
'I'm not allowed to say anything about it yet though.'
