Brave face: A lonely Renee Zellweger dines solo at a restaurant in New York today just days after her split from boyfriend Bradley Cooper

As a star of the silver screen, she's clearly mastered the art of performance.

And today was no exception as Renee Zellweger hid her heartache following her split from Bradley Cooper by putting on a brave face as she dined alone.

The 41-year-old actress was spotted looking lonely as she went for a solo brunch at Le Pain Quotidien.

The Bridget Jones actress was seen talking on her hands free phone as she waited for her order and remained a cheery disposition throughout her conversation.

Later she enjoyed perusing Crawford Doyle Booksellers in Madison Avenue and bought a copy of the David Brooks book The Social Animal.

The psychological narrative follows the lives of American couple, Harold and Erica, through the ups and downs of their lives.

Perhaps the actress is looking to literature to get a deeper understanding of her newly-single status.

Keeping it casual: The actress was wearing her gym gear as she took a seat at Le Pain Quotidien where she was spotted chatting on her hands-free phone

Keeping warm: Before arriving at the eatery Renee was all trussed up in a black padded jacket

Renee's brave face came in marked contrast to Hangover star Bradley, who was pictured arriving back to Los Angeles from the Big Apple last night.

The 36-year-old star looked dejected as he strolled through LAX airport on his own, pulling along a rolling suitcase and carrying a backpack.

Cooper and Jerry McGuire actress Renee ended their relationship after almost two years together.

Hitting the shops: Afterwards the actress went book shopping and bought The Social Animal by David Brooks

Rumours of a split first surfaced in February when they both attended a pre-Oscar party but did spend much time with each other at all.

The couple were seen together as recently as last week when Renee went to support the A-Team actor as he filmed an episode of Inside The Actor's Studio.

Multiple sources have confirmed the split, however their representatives are yet to officially comment.

Sad: Bradley Cooper arrived back in Los Angeles last night looking very forlorn

Cooper is currently on a promotional blitz for his latest film Limitless which opens in theatres this weekend. The film is about a pill that can make a person super-intelligent.

He appeared on the Howard Stern this week to promote the movie but denied plans to marry the Cold Mountain star and refused to speak about his former love.

Cooper first met Zellweger six years ago on the set of their movie Case 39.

During that time both walked down the aisle separately but neither stayed married for long. Cooper was briefly wed to actress Jennifer Esposito while

Zellweger's union to country singer Kenny Chesney lasted just weeks.

They then got together in the summer of 2009 and have rarely spoken publicly about their romance.

But in an interview with Entertainment Tonight last year he gushed: 'I can't say enough about her... I just love her. I [loved] coming to work. I love acting with her. I can learn so much from her'.

While he was being interviewed on Inside The Actors Studio last week, Bradley pointed out that his girlfriend Renee was in the audience.

The embarrassed Oscar winner blushed before standing up to wave hello as the audience applauded.

She had been sat with Cooper's mother Gloria, who gave her a warm smile. Renee has regularly been seen with who she had surely hoped would be her future mother-in-law.

Zellweger is said to be close to Cooper's family and was also close to his father, who passed away earlier this year.

She dropped out of presenting at the Golden Globes at the last minute to support Cooper after the death of his father Charles, 71.

The couple were first photographed together in New York in July 2009 and they were spotted kissing in Spain in early August.

The following week he was so enamoured with the actress that he took her to his his home town of Philadelphia to meet his family.

A source close to the couple said last year: 'They're so down to earth and [they] spend time with family whenever possible'.

No sign of trouble: The couple seemed happy just last week when Renee supported Bradley as he was interviewed for Inside The Actors Studio
