Put it away, Simon! Cowell looks scruffy (and slightly height-challenged) in unbuttoned shirt and jeans as he unveils new X Factor USA panel

With two stunning young women joining him on the X Factor USA panel, Simon Cowell should really have pushed the boat out style-wise for the official unveiling of the new line-up yesterday.

But instead of going for the dapper approach like his fellow male judge L.A. Reid in a smart suit, the music mogul opted for his usual attire of a white shirt and scruffy jeans as he posed alongside Reid, and new additions to the judging panel, Britney Spears and Demi Lovato.

Cowell ensured his shirt was sufficiently plunging as he spoke to reporters on stage at New York's Beacon Theatre.

However, even Cowell's chest hair wasn't enough to distract from the noticeable height difference between the X Factor mogul and his fellow judges.

As he stood on the stage, Cowell looked to be the same height as both Britney and Demi, who were both wearing heels, and only slightly taller than record label boss Reid.

Following the unveiling of the new-look panel, Cowell headed out for dinner with his fellow judges at ABC Kitchen in New York.

Announcement: Cowell was joined on stage by new judges Britney Spears and Demi Lovato, as well as returning judge L.A. Reid

Excited: The quartet all looked in good spirits as they discussed the return of the programme

The official announcement about the next series of the show came after weeks of speculation surrounding the new judges, with names including Miley Cyrus being thrown around.

Confirming new judges Britney, 30, and 19-year-old Demi, Cowell tweeted: 'Simon could barely hide his delight, tweeting: 'Can't believe it's finally happened. Very exciting!'

While Demi is believed to be getting just up of $1million for her role on the show, Britney is thought to have negotiated a $15million pay packet to be a panellist on the programme.

Britney and Demi will replace Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger - who were axed after poor ratings on last year's debut series - sitting alongside show boss Simon and music executive L.A.

Talking of her new role, Britney said: 'I am so excited about this whole experience.

It's gonna be so much fun and so different from anything I've ever done and I'm ready to find the true star.'

However, not everybody is so pleased about the new additions to the panel, with American Idol boss Nigel Lythgoe saying he believes the pair both lack experience.

He told E! News: 'I hadn't ever considered them. I always like mentors who have a lot more experience.

'But having said that, these two ladies have had so much personal experience - it'll be interesting. I like someone who's been there and knows the whole gamut of what these kids are going through and help them through.'
