It looked set to be one of the most memorable celebrity weddings in a long time.

So Michelle Keegan could certainly be forgiven for cutting a glum figure yesterday as her boyfriend Max George announced the pair had called off their engagement.

The Coronation Street actress attempted to keep her head down as she took a break during filming for the ITV soap.

Cutting a glum figure: Michelle Keegan was seen yesterday on the Coronation Street set looking sombre as her The Wanted boyfriend Max George announced they had ended their engagement

Wearing a green top and grey zip-up jacket, Michelle looked sombre and furrowed her eyebrows as she anxiously checked her mobile phone during takes.

The Wanted singer Max made the shock admission that the pair had called off their wedding during an interview on Ryan Seacrest's radio station KIIS FM yesterday.

When the presenter and his co-host Ellen K asked the 23-year-old about his relationship status, Ryan told Ellen that the star was engaged.

But, Max quickly corrected them and replied: 'No, no, no, not anymore.'

Still together: The pair got engaged last year after just six months of dating

The station then posted the news on their Twitter feed, writing: 'BREAKING: @MaxTheWanted from @thewantedmusic is not engaged anymore! We’re chatting w/ him now listen live http://www.kiisfm.com.'

The line reportedly went dead after Max made the shocking announcement.

However, the singer was quick to reassure fans that he and Michelle are still together, writing on his Twitter page shortly after the interview: 'Hey everyone, so just to clear up any rumours, me and Shell are still very much together, just there is no wedding.

'The call got cut off.... And made it sound much worse.'

A spokesperson for Michelle has confirmed to MailOnline they have called off the engagement, but insisted they are still an item.

The rep said: 'They have recently called off their engagement, but they are still together.'

After Max was apparently cut off during the interview, he quickly rejoined the conversation on air when he was then asked whether he was enjoying the benefits of being in a boyband.

He replied: 'Absolutely'.

Clearing it all up: After his radio interview, Max took to Twitter to explain his comments, revealing he's still dating Michelle

Max is currently in America with his Wanted bandmates, and certainly appears to be enjoying his trip.

He was seen surrounded by scantly clad female admirers during Spring Break concerts and even managed to mingle with Jennifer Lopez last week after they performed on American Idol.

And earlier this week he was also spotted filming his new music video. He grinned widely as he cosied up to a number of models for the shoot.

Max and Michelle got engaged last year after just six months of dating.

But split rumours began circulating at the start of this year, when Michelle reportedly asked her singer beau for some 'space'.

Although she has since spoken out to slam the reports and a representative for her said at the time: 'The date had never been set. They are still very much a couple.'

It is not clear when they called off their wedding but it is thought they were still engaged about a month ago.
