Casual date: Alexandra Burke and Jermain Defoe dress down in tracksuits for a late breakfast at a cafe in North London on Sunday morning

They're only a few weeks into their new romance, but Alexandra Burke proved quite the support to new boyfriend Jermain Defoe in his time of need.

The new couple enjoyed a romantic breakfast together on Sunday morning, just hours after the Tottenham Hotspurs player witnessed his friend Fabrice Muamba fighting for his life on the pitch.

Dressed down in tracksuits, Defoe, 29, and Burke, 23, entered a cafe near his North London home separately, despite having arrived in the same vehicle.

Both looked tired and Defoe was visibly strained after a difficult game on Saturday, which was cut short when Bolton Wanderers player collapsed at White Hart Lane.

Defoe was seen weeping on the pitch as he stood back and watched medics trying to resuscitate the ailing footballer.

During his breakfast with Burke, it appeared he was in a contemplative mood.

Low-key: The couple, who have only been dating a few weeks, were reluctant to be photographer together

He wrote on Twitter: 'What I witnessed yesterday really puts life into perspective. When you see people judge others especially as they don't know them... its wrong.

'Its not worth having hate in your heart for people. Especially if you don't know them.. I thank God that FAB is stable...'

Burke then retweeted his comments, before reiterating her support for Manchester United a few hours later.

Later on Sunday, Burke was visibly absent as Defoe joined his mother and sister to visit Muamba at the London Chest Hospital in East London, where he remains criticality ill in intensive care.

New romance: The couple have only been dating a few weeks, but have been friends for years

The couple's cafe outing comes a week after they were first pictured together at the filming of Celebrity Juice.

Although the couple have remained coy on their relationship, they've cheered each other on in their respective careers on their Twitter pages.

She said recently: 'Jermain and I have been friends for ages. But at the moment I don’t really wish to talk about it. I’m sorry.'

Burke is quite a change from Defoe's usual type of women after he dated a string of glamour models and reality stars.

Concern: Defoe, his mother Sandra and sister Chonte visited Muamba at the London Chest Hospital in East London

Defoe was previously dated a host of glamour models and reality TV stars, including a broken engagement to retail manager Charlotte Mears in 2007.

He left Mears heartbroken when he dumped her for her friend Danielle Lloyd.

Lloyd's romance with Defoe fizzled out after just two months and she went on to date his team-mate Jamie O'Hara - her now-fiance, who currently plays for the Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Defoe then dated Celebrity Big Brother winner Chantelle Houghton for five months in 2009, and later that same dated Welsh model Imogen Thomas for six months.

Distressed: A worried Defoe looks on as medical staff try to resuscitate Bolton Wanderers' Fabrice Muamba at White Hart Lane on Saturday

Meanwhile, Burke admitted she was surprised to receive a tweet from her former X Factor mentor Cheryl Cole after the Girls Aloud star had previously ignored her text messages.

On March 3, Cole wrote on Twitter: 'Omg !!.. Where have I been .. Alexandra looking HOT !! In her new Video.. #YesAlex .. Ps.. Text me your secrets please lmao.'

Burke said: 'I haven't heard anything from Cheryl for over a year and then she tweeted me publicly the other day, which I was really surprised about. I've texted her a few times but never heard anything back.

'I was surprised to hear from her on Twitter, which was very public. Don't get me wrong, it was great for her to get in touch and it was a very lovely message, but I would prefer to hear from her more privately and maybe go for a drink and catch up properly.'
