Black tie: Jodie Foster looked chic in a simple black number at the New York Film Festival Opening night of her film Carnage

She is known more for her glittering and critically acclaimed career than her array of dazzling red carpet looks.

So it's no surprise that Jodie Foster plumped for a woman's staple party outfit - the little black dress - as she stepped out at the New York Film Festival tonight.

The 48-year-old actress looked chic in the simple black velvet number which she teamed with a pair of black heels.

However, despite her years of acting experience, the star looked distinctly uncomfortable at having to pose for the cameras at the event at New York's Lincoln Centre.

The star was attending the premiere of her forthcoming film Carnage which is opening the festival.

She stars alongside John C Reilly, who was also at the premiere and plays her husband in the Roman Polanski-directed film.
