Saluting the fans: Jennifer Aniston put on a happy face in Manhattan last night, as she stepped out with boyfriend Justin Theroux

A wise man once said if someone strikes out at you it is best to turn the other cheek.

And Jennifer Aniston seems to have taken these words of wisdom to heart, putting on a happy exterior on the day she was hit with insensitive comments by her ex-husband Brad Pitt.

The Friends actress smiled as she emerged from her Manhattan apartment with her new boyfriend Justin Theroux, last night.

The couple shared a joke as they made their way into a waiting car and headed off to the launch of clothing line Hoyle Jackson at Bloomingdale’s.

Jennifer was there to support creators of the brand and twin sisters Nina and Clare Hallworth, who have styled the actress for over 15 years.

The 42-year-old looked stunning in a trouser suit, while her beau wore dark jeans, trousers and long dark double-breasted coat.

The pair's date night comes after a no doubt difficult day for the Friends star.

Her ex-husband Brad, 47, claimed he had been leading a an 'uninteresting' life, referring to his marriage to the Horrible Bosses star.

He said: 'I spent the '90s trying to hide out, trying to duck the full celebrity cacophony.

'I started to get sick of myself sitting on a couch, holding a joint, hiding out. It started feeling pathetic.

'It became very clear to me that I was intent on trying to find a movie about an interesting life, but I wasn't living an interesting life myself.

'I think that my marriage had something to do with it. Trying to pretend the marriage was something that it wasn't.'

His comments came at an insensitive time for the actress, who rushed to Los Angeles to be by her mother Nancy's hospital bedside after she suffered a stroke at the weekend.

The distraught star was in tears during a recent visit to the hospital to see the 75-year-old, with whom she was estranged for many years but finally reconciled with in 2008.
