Close friend: Black Eyed Peas singer Fergie has spoken out about Cheryl Cole's relationship with ex-husband Ashley

Cheryl Cole 'didn't want to divorce' Ashley Cole, her close friend Black Eyed Peas singer Fergie has revealed.

Fergie told Closer magazine that Cheryl only ended the relationship with Ashley because she 'felt she had no choice' after his infidelity, but not because she wanted to.

She said: 'The next chance will be Ashley's last chance, there's no doubt about that.

Last chance: Fergie, who attended Cheryl's 28th birthday party last month in London, said this is make or break time with the pair

'Cheryl's a lot stronger than she was two years ago. The relationship will be on her terms.

'He really hurt her and I couldn't at the time ever see her taking him back.

'She really loved him and didn't want to get divorced, she just felt she had no choice.

'But she needs to follow her own heart.'

'The love is still there': Fergie said Cheryl needs to 'follow her own heart' when it comes to her relationship with Ashley

Fergie, who grew close to Cheryl when the Promise This singer supported her on tour last year, added that Cheryl is sure to 'follow her own heart' in the newly-rekindled relationship.

She said: 'It's easy for people to say she's crazy for taking him back but life isn't as simple as that.

'If love is still there and she truly believes he's changed then she should go for it if that's what she wants.

'It doesn't matter what her family, friends, or her management team say, it's her life and her decision.

'She's a very traditional girl at heart and wants kids and to grow old with somebody.

'She is really strong now, and if she does decide to give him another chance he's going to have to be the perfect husband because it's her dream to be the perfect wife and mother.'

Cheryl was left humiliated by Ashley, 30, after he was accused of numerous affairs throughout their four-year marriage.

She divorced him in September last year but claimed in an interview that she would 'always love him'.

The pair sparked rumours of a reconciliation earlier this year and made things official when Ashley attended Cheryl's recent 28th birthday party.

Colourful: Cole's Girls Aloud bandmate Kimberley Walsh appeared to be wearing a fuchsia mini dress

Meanwhile, Sinitta has also weighed in on the relationship, telling Star magazine: 'They obviously love each other so much and to have gone through what they have gone through and to be back together just shows that true love conquers all.

'They both know who each other are and both know what they’re getting into. You have to be with the person you love, like that Kylie song Better The Devil You Know.'

Cheryl is now in Los Angeles, along with her Girls Aloud bandmate Kimberley Walsh and brother Garry Tweedy, and was spotted dressed up to the nines as she enjoyed an evening out last night.

But despite her glamorous appearance, it appears the pop star wasn't quite so ready for her close-up, and hide from photographers as she arrived back at the hotel.

Instead of pulling up outside the hotel, the trio's car drove them into an underground carpark so she could sneak in.

The 28-year-old singer appears to be wearing a striking red dress, while Walsh was equally colourful in a fuchsia number.

Cole's latest night out on Sunday came two days after she met up with close friend Derek Hough at the Sushi Roku restaurant.

Cheryl, her brother Garry and Walsh arrived in Los Angeles on Thursday for a holiday.

It marked the first time she had returned to the U.S. since her unceremonious firing from X Factor USA nearly two months ago.

She was replaced by Nicole Scherzinger, who had been due to be a co-host on the series with Welsh hunk Steve Jones.

Cheryl's spokesperson told Mail Online: 'Cheryl is taking some time out as she said on her website last month.'
