Braving the crowds: Brad Pitt and actress Angelina Jolie arrive on the red carpet for the screening of the film The Tree of Life after being booed at an earlier press screening
After starting the day being booed and hissed at a press event, Brad Pitt could have found himself with mixed feelings about the premiere of his new film Tree Of Life.
But if he had any misgivings they didn't show as he smiled for the cameras at Cannes tonight.
It must have helped to have his girlfriend Angelina Jolie on his arm. The stunning brunette looked at her best with her hair loose around her shoulders, in a floor length brownish black Versace Atelier gown which showed her long legs as she walked.
Looking her best: Angelina appeared youthful and glowing, keeping her hair and make-up simple
The art house movie, which Brad funded, produced and starred in, received a decidedly mixed reception when it was shown to the press earlier in the day.
At a press conference afterwards Brad was left to answer questions by the absent director Terrence Malick, leading to the obvious annoyance of the crowd.
Taking over from the absent Malick, Brad revealed he had debated taking the role as he was thinking about how his children would react if they ever saw it.
Looking her best: Angelina wore a show stopping floor-length gown
Magic moment: The pair made their feelings for one another obvious, kissing and holding hands on the carpet
In the film the 47-year-old plays a strict father of three sons being raised in 1950s suburbia.
His son Jack is played by Sean Penn, who looks back on his childhood from adulthood.
Looking her best: Angelina shows off her long leg as she poses alone
'I think about everything I do now my kids are going to see when they grow up and how are they going to feel but they know me as a dad and I hope they'll just think of me as a pretty, damn-good actor.'
Also on the red carpet was Sean Penn, who joked ,'Here's daddy' as he met Pitt.
Toast of the night: Angelina was at the premiere to support her partner, with whom she has six children
The stars actually appear in any scenes together because Pitt plays the 'daddy' in the movie with a young actor playing a youthful version of Penn's character.
The two actors chatted with Jessica Chastain, who plays the mother in the film.
Critics were divided by the movie.
Dinner date: The couple leave the L'Affable restaurant later in the evening
Celebrity guests: Amongst the audience were Gavin Rossdale and Gwen Stefani and Restless co-stars Henry Hopper and Mia Wasikowska, who wore Valentino Couture
Daily Mail critic Baz Bamigboye wrote: 'The film's not a flop by any means. It's a visual sensation.'
But he cautioned: 'It's not the worst movie ever made but it is a lumbering mess.'
Elsewhere the industry bible Variety predicted: 'This inescapably divisive picture could captivate the zeitgeist for a spell.'
The Hollywood Reporter added: 'A unique film that will split opinions every which way.'
Family portrait: Co-stars Pitt, Jessica Chastain and Sean Penn pose on the red carpet
Best of the frocks: actress Zoe Saldana in Armani Privé Couture and French actress Elsa Zylberstein
